I was the President of the Los Angeles City Council, a Councilman for the 10th District (South Central LA) and prior to that I was Speaker of the California State Assembly. I got to know Eugene “Chip” Matthews when I was first running for public office in about 1993. As a young attorney, he walked door to door in support of my campaign. Since then, I have had many opportunities to work with him. He put in a lot of work to build bridges between African American and Latino communities. He has worked on mentoring projects with the Brotherhood Crusade. He did Pro Bono work to help non-profits working in the inter-city. He constantly worked behind the scenes in countless city, county, state, and federal elections to get politicians introduced to Black and Brown leaders in our inner city neighborhoods...I have seen Chip’s involvement in campaigns, mentoring, and building relationships and helping in the inner-city...He has also done a tremendous amount of work with the homeless. 

I firmly believe that Mr. Matthews is a much needed asset in our community. He is honest, smart, compassionate, concerned, and a dedicated advocate for the good of our most vulnerable citizens.

Mr. Eugene Matthews ... is a good lawyer who helps a lot of people. He fought 100% for my son, 100% of the time.  My son, and two of his friends were charged with a crime they absolutely did not commit. The offer was 30 years instead of life.  My son was only 18. I talked with several lawyers, because I did not have enough money, none of them would take my case. I met with Mr. Matthews, and he went to talk with my son in jail. Because Mr. Matthews listened to my son carefully, and believed that he was innocent, Mr. Matthews took my case even though I could not afford the full amount of the fees.  

Mr. Matthews spent hours finding every bit of information there was about the case  witnesses. As he found more information, the prosecutor lowered the offer to 12 years. Mr. Matthews did not want to take the 12 year deal because he thought that my son was innocent and that he could win this case. 

Mr. Matthews spent 3 weeks in trial, fighting like a lion for my son’s life. He knew so much about that case that he made some of those witnesses admit that their earlier statements were wrong. All 12 of those jurors came back and said my son was not guilty. 

My son is now grown, he has a good job and family, and I have 5 grand children from him, all because Mr. Matthews fought for my family when no one else would.  

 He was always honest, he always did what he said he was going to do, most importantly, he always had my son’s back. 

Chip Matthews is trustworthy, steadfast and wise. In the 23 years that I have known Chip, I have sought his counsel on numerous occasions with regard to business and personal matters.He has the uncanny ability to distill any situation down to its essence, present you with all the options, and then help you make the best decision.I value Chip's candor, his quick intellect and his wealth of experience.I recommend his legal services wholeheartedly.
